Lighting questions

How high should a wall sconce be?

Around sixty to sixty six inches from the floor to the centre of the light. Beside a bathroom mirror, put one on each side at roughly face height so the light falls evenly across the face rather than casting shadows down it.

Can I put a copper light in a bathroom?

Yes, if it is rated for the spot. Away from the shower, a damp location rating is enough. Inside the shower area it needs a wet location rating. Ask the workshop which rating the light carries before ordering.

Is a handmade light safe to install in the United States?

It can be, but check for a UL or ETL listing, which inspectors and insurers look for. If a light is not listed, a licensed electrician can advise on fitting it. Also confirm the socket size, since lights made for other markets often differ.

Pendant, sconce or island light

Pendants hang from the ceiling over an island, a table or a sink, and they do most of the work in a kitchen. The height, spacing and bulb questions are covered in copper pendant lights and brass pendant lights. Wall sconces light faces rather than surfaces, so they belong beside a mirror, along a hallway or either side of a bed.

Copper or brass light

A copper shade throws a warm, slightly amber light. Brass throws a brighter, more yellow one. Copper holds its own against dark timber and green walls, brass stays crisp against white and pale stone. Both look best with warm bulbs.

Safety listings for handmade lights

In the United States, electrical inspectors and insurers look for a UL or ETL listing on a light fitting. Many handmade lights from small workshops are not listed, even when they are well made. Ask before ordering, have a licensed electrician fit it, and check the socket size, because lights made for Europe and North Africa often use a different one.

Anywhere steam reaches, a light needs to be rated for damp locations, and inside a shower area it needs a wet location rating.

Keeping the metal

Switch the light off and let it cool, then dust it with a dry cloth. Unlacquered copper and brass darken fastest near heat and cooking, so a light over a hob changes quicker than one in a hallway. Among the workshops we list, CopperKesh makes the most lighting, pendants and sconces in patinated copper, and Zayian makes copper pendants too.
