Bathtubs and Showers questions

How do I clean a copper bathtub?

Rinse it after use, wash it with mild soap and a soft cloth, and dry it. Keep bleach, abrasive pads and acidic cleaners off it, because they strip the patina unevenly. A tub finished differently on the inside may come with its own care notes, so keep them.

Can an exposed brass shower go over a freestanding tub?

Yes, and it is a common pairing. You need a rail around or above the tub for a curtain, fixed into the ceiling or the wall, and the shower valve placed where you can reach it from outside the bath before you get in.

Is a thermostatic shower valve worth it?

Usually. It holds the temperature you set when water is used elsewhere in the house, which a basic mixer does not. A pressure balancing valve does a similar job for less, and most United States plumbing codes require one of the two in a shower.

Plan the bath before the floor goes down

A freestanding tub needs its waste and its water supply in the right place under the floor, and a floor standing tap needs its position marked before tiling. That makes a bath the first decision in a bathroom rather than the last. The practical questions for copper bathtubs and brass clawfoot bathtubs are covered on their own pages.

Hammered or smooth

A hammered tub hides scratches and water marks, and the texture catches light along its sides. A smooth tub shows the colour of the metal more evenly and shows every mark too. In a bathroom used every day by a family, hammered is the easier finish to live with.

Exposed shower systems

A brass shower system with the pipes on the face of the wall is part plumbing and part fixture, so the valve matters as much as the look. Ask whether the mixer is thermostatic or pressure balancing. Both stop the water turning suddenly hot when someone runs a tap elsewhere, and plumbing codes in most of the United States require one of them in a shower.

If the shower is going outside, read outdoor copper showers first, because winter is what breaks them.

Delivery

A tub travels in a crate by freight rather than by parcel. Check the crate before signing for it, measure the stairs and the doorways, and have two people ready on the day. Among the workshops we list, Zayian and CopperKesh make copper tubs and Rod & Rails makes exposed brass shower systems.
