Faucets and Taps questions

Is brass safe for drinking water?

Brass made for drinking water is, as long as it is lead free. In the United States that means no more than 0.25 percent lead on the surfaces the water touches, certified to NSF/ANSI 372. Ask a workshop for that certificate before buying a kitchen or bathroom tap.

Can I put a brass tap on a copper sink?

Yes. Brass is mostly copper, so the two sit together without any problem, and they age in the same warm direction. The brass stays a little yellower than the copper around it, which most people find looks better than an exact match.

How do I deal with limescale on a brass tap?

Dry the tap after use in a hard water area and scale barely forms. For build up, wipe on a mild descaler with a cloth, rinse it off quickly and dry it. On unlacquered brass that leaves a brighter patch for a few weeks, which blends back in.

Choose the mount before the style

The sink or the wall decides which taps can work. A sink or counter drilled with one hole takes a single hole tap. Two holes at a fixed spacing take a bridge tap, see brass bridge faucets. A vessel bowl usually needs a tall tap or a spout from the wall. Measure what you have first and the list gets short quickly.

Lead free brass, for anything you drink from

Brass is copper and zinc, and older brass often contained lead to make it easier to machine. In the United States, a tap that delivers drinking water has to be lead free, which means no more than 0.25 percent lead across the surfaces the water touches. Handmade taps from overseas workshops are not always certified to that standard, so ask for it before you order a kitchen or bathroom tap. Look for NSF/ANSI 372 on the paperwork.

Unlacquered, aged or lacquered

Unlacquered brass arrives bright and darkens where hands and water touch it. Aged brass is darkened at the workshop and sealed, so it arrives looking old and stays that way. Lacquered brass keeps its shine until the coating wears. The two living finishes are covered in unlacquered brass faucets and aged brass bathroom taps.

In the kitchen

Check the spout height against your tallest pot and the reach against the middle of the sink. If you cook with heavy pans, a tap on the wall behind the hob saves carrying them, see brass pot fillers. Among the workshops we list, Zayian makes bridge and wall mounted taps and Rod & Rails makes a solid brass pot filler.
