Brass throws a brighter, yellower light than copper. Size the run against the island, not against the ceiling.

How many pendants over an island?
Together they should cover roughly a third of its length, and two medium ones often look better than three small. Keep the outer pendants in from the ends by at least a foot.
Lacquered or unlacquered over a hob?
Unlacquered will change quickly there, because cooking puts oil in the air, and it will change slightly unevenly. Above a dining table the same pendant takes years. Lacquered stays as it arrived.
How high should it hang?
The bottom of the shade thirty to thirty six inches above the counter. That lights the surface without putting the shade between you and whoever is opposite.
Brass changes the light differently to copper
A brass shade throws a yellower, brighter light than copper, which reads warm without going pink. Against white or pale stone it stays crisp. Against a lot of timber it can disappear, and copper usually holds its own better there. Both want a warm lamp, around 2700 kelvin.
Sizing and spacing
Over an island, the usual rule is that the shades together should cover about a third of the length of the island. Two medium pendants often look better than three small ones. Space them evenly and keep the outer ones in from the ends by at least a foot, or the run looks like it is falling off the edge.
Height is the same as any pendant: the bottom of the shade thirty to thirty six inches above the counter, so it lights the surface without blocking the person opposite.
Lacquered or not
A lacquered brass pendant stays the colour it arrived. Unlacquered goes amber and then deep bronze, faster in a kitchen where cooking puts oil in the air. Above a hob, expect the change to be quick and slightly uneven. Above a dining table it will take years.
Fitting
- Socket. E26 for the United States, E27 for Europe. Close but not the same, so confirm before ordering.
- Drop. Rod or cord, and whether it can be shortened on site.
- Weight. Solid brass is heavy. A plasterboard ceiling needs a fixing into a joist or a proper cavity anchor.
