What copper does to the light
A copper shade reflects warm light downward and throws a soft amber cast onto the counter under it. It is flattering to wood, terracotta and stone, and it fights with a very cool white LED. Buy warm lamps, around 2700 kelvin, or the copper will look brown rather than lit.
A polished interior is a mirror, so the bulb shows in it and glare can be strong at eye height. A hammered or matte interior scatters the light and is easier to sit under.
Wiring and fitting
- Socket size. Workshops selling into the United States usually fit E26, and European ones E27. The bulbs are close but not the same, so confirm before ordering.
- Dimming. The fixture rarely limits this, the lamp and the switch do. If you want dimming, buy dimmable lamps and a compatible dimmer.
- Weight. Solid copper is heavier than it looks. A plasterboard ceiling needs a proper fixing or a joist above it.
